Invited by artist Robert Panda, we joined a group of artists for a residency in the village of Escoural, near Montemor-o-Novo. The aim was to create an artistic intervention in the courtyard of a former school, now used as a community centre by the local inhabitants.
During a week-long residency, we developed a concept inspired by the slower pace of life in Alentejo and the distinctive presence of traditional chimneys in the village skyline. Exploring the local colour palette, we sought to establish a dialogue between the intervention and its surrounding landscape.
Drawing inspiration from traditional namoradeiras and church confessionals, the installation explores notions of intimacy, conversation and different perspectives, both visual and physical. Chaminés translates these ideas into a sculptural structure that invites interaction, offering a place for individual contemplation and shared encounters within the public space.
